FINDING YOUR PURPOSE - A STEP BY STEP APPROACH TO ALIGNING WITH YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF

“Your purpose gave birth to you. It has moulded and shaped who you are and what you do. Your purpose is the reason you live and breathe. Your purpose guides your heart, hands, and head. It is alive in you. It is there, within, that you must seek to know it and live it”

- IIyanla Vanzant

Being here, and being endowed with a bundle of resources as time, energy, and talent, is not any random coincidence! There’s a reason why you’re a part of the game – you have a role to play. It’s a role that only you, ONLY – YOU can play; none other. Even if there are millions of others doing the same thing as you, yet, YOU are different and unique in the way you do what you do. There just can’t be an absolute substitute to your uniqueness in the whole Universe. You’re here to give expression to your innate individuality, to showcase your strengths in a way that’s special to you, to give away your gifts to a cause that’s bigger than you, and to transform mere existence into a life of meaning. The key is to find your true work-life purpose that will elevate you, empower you, energise you, and enliven you! Living a life that matches with the music of your Soul-Song is what brings about genuine and lasting happiness. You can’t expect yourself to stay upbeat and productive for long, if you’re stuck in a job that doesn’t match up with your natural prowess and cherished purpose.

Often times however, it’s not the easiest thing to find the purpose that stirs you awake and nudges you to give all that is needed for its unrelenting pursuit. But, you can discover your true purpose with a simple yet powerful five-step exercise, as contoured below. Before you start on, remember a few vital points. The exercise requires you to place your mind in a quiet and tranquil zone, because a calm mind incubates the best and the most genuine responses. Unless you quieten your mind and clear all unnecessary clutter, you will not be able to listen to or appreciate the sagacity of your mind. Meditation will help you in achieving the desired placidity. Next, keep a notebook or your personal journal handy. It’s important to pen down whatever you discern from this internal inquiry. Be mindful, that this exercise is all about YOU. It’s about the visions, the beliefs, and the self-image that YOU hold in your heart. Do not let the perceptions, opinions, judgements, and expectations of others cloud your vision. The only validation that you need is from your own heart and soul. Simply let your inner light guide you to clarity – it speaks to you, when you’re ready to listen. Lastly, write your answers in the affirmative and in present tense. This will bring you to the now, which is all there is; and it will cement your strengths and dreams all the more.

1. Finding your Strengths – “Your visions will be clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakens” ~ G. Jung.

Profound wisdom lies in the depths of your heart; you don’t have to look outside to find meaning, insights, or strengths – you’re simply naturally endowed with these treasures. You only have to be aware and conscious of the gifts that you are blessed with. Start by asking yourself some pivotal questions as these – “What are my greatest strengths?” “What am I good at?” “What are my unique personal qualities, talents, and inclinations?” Write what strikes you first; for generally the first rush of emotions, the first forthcoming response, and the first flash of insight is what signifies the truest essence of who you are.

My Greatest Strengths are:

2. Finding the Flow – “People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing” ~ Dale Carnegie. When you love what you do, you simply lose track of time. You’re totally in the moment – engrossed, enraptured, engaged. Nothing distracts you or affects you. Ingenuity and creativity is what you ooze. Ideas, images, and inspirations enthral your senses. You’re fully present. Such is the magic of flow activities. It could be a sport you love to play, or reading travelogues, or designing interiors, or cartography, or photography, or playing a musical instrument, or browsing through fashion and beauty websites et al. The flow activities are a very potent indicator of what you totally love to do; and if there is a way through which you can craft a career out of what you absolutely adore, success is guaranteed. The greatest of all thinkers, philosophers, visionaries, trailblazers, entrepreneurs, and achievers have ardently emphasised this very-very important secret of success. When you love what you do, and do what you love, you’re creating the most fertile ground for growth and accomplishment.

The Flow Activities that Enchant Me are:

3. Finding a Cause – “The Law of Attraction is Mental Power; you’re telling the Universe what you want from it. The Law of Divine Compensation is Spiritual Power; you’re asking the Universe what it wants from you.” ~ Abraham Hicks. To find meaning and purpose, find a cause that transcends you and aims at bringing about a positive shift in the lives of those you impact in the present or may impact in future. Create an image in your mind about how you can positively inspire or uplift, benefit or heal, enrich or empower others en route to their success. Think of ways in which you can make use of your key strengths and talents for creating a better world. Are you a fitness fiend, who wants to see a fitter, stronger, and a healthier world? Are you a music enthusiast who wants to see the world swoon and sway to the entrancement of your song? Are you a techno-wizard who dreams of revolutionising the world with new gadgets and tools? Whatever it is that you envision – always link your potential with how you can better the world around you. Doing so, will give you a sense of worthiness. When you know that you’re making yourself count by giving expression to your talents, you’d find more meaning and pleasure in what you do. When you genuinely intend to serve or empower others, you won’t have to chase success; it’ll simply come along the way.

The Cause that Captures my Heart, and Can Help Me Express my Potential for the Good of Others is:

4. Finding the Method – “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can” ~ Arthur Ashe. Now that you’re more clear and conscious about your highest potential and have a cause that you deeply cherish, you owe it to yourself to give tangible shape to your ideas, goals, and visions. Dig into practical details of the method(s) that best suit your present circumstances, and allow you to utilise your strengths towards effectuating your chosen cause. Don’t be deterred by not having enough time, investment, staff, resources or support. Those are all excuses. All you need is YOU. It’s a dream that YOU have dreamt, and it is up to YOU to bring it to life. Once you start your journey, you will begin to attract the right kind of people and resources. Ideate about practical ways and concrete steps that you need to take in the direction of your dreams. Have a blueprint of how you’re going to pursue and achieve your goals and place it on your desk or bedside. You could even stick it on to the mirror. Let your blueprint guide you and motivate you to take the next step forward. Meet people who belong to your chosen field. Take ideas; take notes; take inspiration! Take the first step forward. What’s your Method? A talk show? On-line coaching? Baking sumptuous treats? Achieving higher levels of performance at your current place of work? Stage shows? Counselling? Retail?

The Best Method(s) for Me to Give Expression to My Goals is/are:

5. Finding Courage – “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are” ~ E. Cummings. There are people who know where they want to be, and also have a road-map in their mind about how to get there. But something stops them! They either keep waiting for better circumstances, or simply lack the courage to give up the comfort of a secure life. For them, the pursuit of their purpose is a risky proposition. Often, those are the same people that die with the weight of regrets. Those are the people who feel unfulfilled or unworthy at the end of their journey. They bury their dreams for the sake of a safe life, without ever venturing into the world of possibilities. But the truth is that if you risk nothing for the pursuit of your passion, you risk more. An even deeper reality is there’s never a perfect time; the most ideal and opportune time is the time when YOU choose to begin your journey. Find courage to take the first step today. Your age, your pace, or your handicap doesn’t matter as long as you keep moving forward. Nothing is insurmountable if you have passion and persistence – your heart knows this. You simply have to convince your mind to play along. Find your moments of courage – the times when you feel strong, able, and energised. Tap those moments to launch yourself; the world beckons!
